PUMPKIN: A Rue How-To
One of our very own designers, Bethany Maddock, happens to be pretty skilled in the pumpkin department. With her handiwork, she carved this jack-o-lantern right in one of Rue’s conference rooms. Here are her tips for taking Halloween pumpkins to the next level.
What you need:
A clean pumpkin
A printed-out pattern
Scotch tape
Poking tool
A dremel or wood shaving tool
Knife
Large spoon
Candle
Steps:
- Let your pumpkin sit inside for 24 hours to come to room temperature
- Fully carve out a clean pumpkin, making the walls fairly thin (separate & save the seeds for snacking)
- Print out your pattern from the computer and cut a loose outline around it
- Place the outline on the pumpkin and fully tape it down to create a flat, almost laminated surface
- Use a poking tool (we used an unraveled paper clip) to trace the pattern in little dots
- Use a dremel to shave the area inside the pattern
- Lastly cut out the actual pattern, leaving tails on either sides of any holes
- Place a candle inside – we recommend orange or red to blend in with the inside of the pumpkin
